LongHouse Reserve: Exterior Gallery

Created by Jack Lenor Larsen (1927–2020), LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton is a 16-acre public sculpture garden and arboretum conceived as an integrated environment for art, nature, and daily life. Internationally renowned as a textile designer, author, and collector, Larsen shaped the grounds as a living case study for experiencing art within a designed landscape.

Developed beginning in 1975 and opened in 1992, the site unfolds through structured plantings, preserved native canopy, and earthen berms that define space at scale. More than sixty sculptures, including works by Willem de Kooning, Sol LeWitt, and Yoko Ono, are integrated throughout the grounds, encouraging exploration and multi-sensory engagement.

Photographing the grounds offered the opportunity to engage Larsen’s vision in its full spatial and conceptual breadth; where landscape, art, and architecture converge as a continuous, lived composition. This was an experience I was honored to undertake for such a special place I hold dear.
